So It Turns Out....

I'm fairly allergic to bee stings.

While trying to flip over the inner cover on the hive on Saturday, I tripped and banged into it, causing the bees to come flying out at me, ready to sting.

Man, they were angry.  I wonder if they are still reliving the honey stealage from the other day.

Anywho, I got stung 9 times; 5 on my back, once on my head, once on my eyebrow, and once on each arm.  I look like a boxer who went too many rounds-one eye is fairly swollen.  My arms blew up and they ITCH.  My joints hurt.  The side of my head is all puffed out, and my back is nicely bumpy.

Good times.

I'm going to need another plan of attack if I plan on keeping bees--which I do.  I'm thinking armor?  Having my husband do it?  Keeping a doctor on retainer?  I haven't decided yet.  Stay tuned for a solution (I hope)!

  3. Just found your blog :-) I, too, am allergic to bee stings...a fact I did not learn until we started keeping bees, got stung on my head and my face swelled up like a balloon. Nice. I now have a prescription for a pretty intense anti-histamine and an EpiPen (the doctor gave me those "just in case the next reaction is even worse than this one"). Awesome. I love keeping bees, though, so I'm now just trying to work through the bit of fear that rose when the swelling and pain exploded. It's all part of the path, I guess ;-) Cheers!

  6. I don't know whether you are still reading/responding to comments, but I thought I would suggest the homeopathic remedy apis mellifica for your bee allergy. My daughter-in-law responded to bee stings with increasing swelling when she was a child. Her mother treated her second and third stings with apis. The second sting made her whole arm swell. The third was local swelling only and the fourth had no swelling at all. She is not allergic anymore.
